Angels In America Illustration

My wife Laura was recently in a production of "Angels in America" at Eastern Michigan University. It's a show about being gay in the 80's during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Everyone in it was brilliant, and I loved it so much that I sat through several of the performances as a sketched various characters and scenes in my sketchbook. This scene in particular shows the character of Harper as she steps into the subconscious of the character Prior. Harper is the drug-addled wife of a law clerk who is discovering his own homosexuality. Prior is dying of AIDS, yet in his subconsciousness he's very animated and full of life. I loved this scene because Harper was so adorable and intense at the same time, and Prior reminded me of Madame Medusa from "The Rescuers", so I drew a lot of inspiration from her in this drawing.
