Spider-Ham and The Black Calf by JayFosgitt Spider-Ham and The Black Calf by JayFosgitt
This is another Spider-Ham villain I'd had in mind for awhile. I may be wrong, but I feel like at some point in the old comics, they did a Black Cat animal parody, but actually called her The Black Cat and made her, well, a cat. Boring, I sez. Black Calf just sounded funnier and better. Lots of fun drawing this.

According to Wikipedia, she was the Black Catfish.

Also, I bet this one has 'My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard' tattooed on her butt.

You should do the Marvel Comics characters as animals who did not appear in the Spider-Ham comics -

-Miss Mink-vel (Miss Marvel)
-Miss Ameri-squirrel OR Miss Ameraccoon (Miss America; I know 'Miss Ameri-squirrel' almost sounds ridiculous, but my other choice is 'Miss Americat', but I have to reject that name, because people will think that she might be related to Captain Americat)
-Firestarfish (Firestar)
-She-Hulk Bunny (She-Hulk)
-X-Mals (X-Men; forget the X-Bugs back in the 80s, I want to see them as various animals)
-Wasp (Wasp as a wasp; We have Ant Ant in the old Spider-Ham comics...)
-Ducky (Bucky)

If you don't know who these characters are, Google search the characters (the actual Marvel versions, not the animal versions).

Actully, in Spider Ham, the parody for the Black Cat was the "Black Catfish". I used to have that issue.

Yeah, that's what I've been told. In this case and most others, I tend to re-create the characters to what I think sounds or would look better, with the exception of Spider-Ham.

Sounds good. ^_^

I also think the Fantastic Four should've been "the Foxtastic Four". ;)

The Black Calf- very original and cool, Jay. That seems a bit of a cheat that they made the character a cat instead of something more clever like this. You're on a roll with Spider-Ham doodles, man =D

Someone else mentioned that Marvel made her "The Black Catfish", which actually sounded pretty original to me and I almost wish I'd thought of it. However, unless you're Dreamworks (and even then it wasn't perfect), it's hard to design a sexy fish.

Good point- I haven't the foggiest on how you make a fish sexy, unless it's a mermaid :XD:

Yeah, if Marvel would get on it, you doing a Spider-Ham comic would be cool. The original Spider-Ham version of Black Cat was the Black Catfish. I will say yours is at least a more attractive anthrophormorphic animal.

Hey, then try drawing her that way. Maybe your style would make that idea look better because in the original she was pretty hideous. A tiny body with a big ol' catfish head with the catfish whiskers and everything. Yet, she had legs, while the character of the Punfisher had a fishtail bottom half. Ah well....

Ha, I remember reading issues of this guy from my brother's comic book collection back when we were little kids. I wonder what ever happened to those issues now that I think about it.

About the only thing missing from this rendering is the almost box-like cleft at the end of his snout. But this is also from memory so feel free to correct me.

And your Black Calf definatly feels more in line with the spirit of the comic than if they did indeed go with a simple Black-Cat... cat... Her art style definatly feels like it's in line with the rest of the comic as well. Bravo.

And that's why I haven't drawn a Zooperhero Batman yet. Though I'm thinking of drawing Hawkgirl as a cat. She would insist that she was the reincarnated spirit of an extraterrestrial hawk, and constantly attribute her successes to her 'hawk instincts', to the general annoyance of the rest of the Justice Society. Ahem.

Anyway, sweet drawing, and I completely agree that Black Calf is sweet awesome! Spider-Ham has every reason to be all prancy-posey. :D

Black Cat is way too obvious. Black Calf, now, that's actually a clever twist!

I agree, if they ever revive Spider-Ham, you should be the man behind the pen!

Ya'know, I'd give a hundred American dollars just to see you do a new Spider-ham comic; I've only ever seen a handful of his stories from various websites available, and seeing your new villains in the following tributes shows how creative you are, next to your Dead Duck series.

Talking of whom, is it me or does Spider-Ham slightly resemble DD here in a way...?

You're totally onto me, my friend! I DO use part of my Dead Duck formula for drawing Spider-Ham's head and eyes! It was never something I intended, but when I first drew the character three years ago, it just kinda happened, and I was like, "Huh. This feels like I'm almost drawing Dead Duck." Must be what Charles Schulz felt like when he drew...well...anybody! "Huh. This feels like I'm almost drawing Charlie Brown...."

Heh, at least it works in artistic value. Now if only Seth macFarlene could do the same without his characters looking...well...stiff :P

Anyhoo, feel free to do any more Spider-Ham when you can 8-)

Seth MacFarlane is by far a better actor/gag writer than he is an artist (though I doubt his pen touches paper at all these days), so I totally see what you mean!
