Peanuts Comic Try out by JayFosgitt Peanuts Comic Try out by JayFosgitt
My friend Shane Houghton (co-creator of the comic book "Reed Gunther", published by Image [link]) is also a writer on the "Peanuts" comic book, published by Boom. Knowing I was a fan of "Peanuts", he suggested I try out as an artist on the book, using a script he wrote. This is what I produced, and though the submission didn't come to anything, it was a fun attempt, and I appreciated Shane giving me the heads up about it. Though I drew everything by hand, the lettering is from a Charles Schulz digital font I found online.

Thanks! Though I'm afraid I can't take credit for the lettering this time--I used a Charles Schulz font that I found online!

The style you use here feels a lot like Schulz's original style when the strip first began, with slightly bigger face to head ratios and smoother lines. Were you going for that?

This was actually my second try at drawing this story. The first time, I tried to emulate the look of the characters as drawn by animator Bill Melendez, who directed the specials and movies. The second time, I was actually given reference material that kinda dictated that the characters would look more polished, like you see here.

I guess this would about time to point out that Blue Sky Studios will be making a CGI animated film based on the Peanuts comics.
Also nice work on this comic

I'd rather see a Peanuts film like that instead of a live-action one!

Condisering that Shult's sond and grandson will be the producers of this upcoming film, I agree

Agreed. Considering how a lot of times cgi films based on beloved characters are done by complete hacks rather than those who have worked closely with the original source(s) and end up being total crap, having Sparky's family involved is proof to me that at least SOME intent on maintaining these characters' integrity is being made.

Great take on Schultz's style :)! Plus the comic has the feel of the original and not some crazy revamp, that's the best part

Excellent work! I would have to agree, the art is on "model" but definitely can see you in the work. Particularly in Snoopy's expressions.

While everything is very on model, there's still a Jay-ness to it that I can't quite put my finger on. Especially with Snoopy and Woodstock. I really dig your Woodstock, by the way. I want to see a big group of them!

Is that his name, or is that the species of bird he is?

I'd like to see you work on Peanuts, I still have mixed feelings about them doing more Peanuts after Schultz died and all but I'm getting over it.

I want to clarify Mr. Fosgitt that I loe the work and you have my support and all I have nothing at all against you doing a Peanuts piece. I didn't want ya thinking I was like crazy mad at it or anything cause its pretty hard to get me crazy mad at anything.

Uh, yeah, I was pretty sure Schultz was most adamant about this *not* happening. Not cool at all.

Agreed. While we should be polite and acknowledge that Jay here and whichever other artists chose to get involved were most likely fans of his work, there should also be some moral dilemma over ignoring what Sparky's dying wishes were.
