POPEYE, EUGENE AND BERNICE by JayFosgitt POPEYE, EUGENE AND BERNICE by JayFosgitt
It's been several years since I last drew Popeye, and as a true fan of the character, I've been itching to return to him. Here I've drawn him with Bernice the Whiffle hen (the original source of his superhuman resilience, pre-spinach) and Eugene the Jeep. I love these characters and hope to draw more of them over time. Plus, they're a great addition to my ever-growing roster of classic cartoon character commissions! Hire me if this sort of thing appeals to you!

Indeed. Not to mention Spinach wasn't all that big a thing in the original 30s strips.

Eugene could also teleport and that made him impossible to cage if he didn't like you. Also he defeated the SeaHag who feared him. Segar didn't live to do another SeaHag story, but she did survive Eugene's attack.

Eugene also has the power of teleportation.
You couldn't hold onto him, unless he liked you. His powers make him a VERY handy pet to have around,BUT his diet would strain your budget !

It was explained to Popeye that jeeps are hybrids of 4-dimensional life and earth-life-hence their powers. This explanation went right over Popeye's head !

Bernice!

You, sir, have made my day! Don't know how I missed this one in your gallery.

You wouldn't happen to know where I can track down a copy of Nemo Illustrated #3, would ya?

You, sir, have just made my day. This is excellent. You captured the style wonderfully, and the world definitely needs more Eugene and Bernice. Had I an infinite supply of money, I would commission more Popeye than you could draw. Who wouldn't love to see some Ham Gravy, or the Sea Hag and Poopdeck Pappy?

I'll, uhh...I'll get to work on that infinite supply of money. 'Till then...

Thanks, Chad. It just figures that the one classic cartoon piece I draw that happens to become my favorite is the one that I drew for myself and didn't get paid for! Yeesh.

Well, there was a sustained sequence where Castor Oyl, to win a bet, tried over & over to kill the whiffle hen. The bird was a real Houdini, etc., and after the 1st attempt, where he wound up smashing the furniture in the living room !, he made the rest of the attempts outdoors. Believe me, the owner of the hen was on VERY safe ground !

As an unofficial representative for all things great and cartoony, let me just say that this is awesome!

Nice takes on Bernice, the one chicken Colonel Sanders couldn't deep-fry, and Eugene, the teleportin' dog that could give Nightcrawler and Hiro Nakaumura a run for their money. Dude, you draw Popeye like you were born to do so :giggle:

He had to rub a chicken's head originally? Oh man.

"Aw *muttering*, it's Bluto! WHERE'S ME CHICKEN??"

I can just hear the heroic music in a Paramount cartoon as he pulls out a chicken from under his sleeve.

He rubbed the poor hen's head all night -and survived a terrible gunfight that felled him the day before. I think he still has some of those bullets embedded in him.

Wow! Now this is spooky I was just asking my kids (who are 8 & 5) if they knew who Popeye was. They didn't, BTW.

Awesome pic, love Eugene and Bernice! Great stuff!

You draw such an awesome Popeye! If they ever decide to revive him or something, you should be the one they call.

your popeye looks soo cool! I'm not a big fan of this character, I mean I don't dislike him but I just know popeye for the tv cartoons, and I didn't know he had these great little fellas, bernice and eugene, they look like a really interesting couple!

Not quite true. There was a cartoon in 1938 and another in 1940, and subsequent cameos at the least until the Hanna-Barbera shows, where Eugene featured in a few episodes. And then there was his appearance in... Popeye and Son...

I have only seen the ones shown on TV.

In fact, one book on the Fleishers' history advised one NOT to watch a Popeye cartoon if it didn't have the classic title footage of a ship's door.

The "ship door" title sequence was used throughout the 30s ones - the ones where Segar was still alive, so could have had more input into the cartoons.

LOL!!! Brilliant! I love how you delve into comic book history, Jay! I remembers the Jeep, but I never heard of Bernice the Wiffle Hen. You must read the old Thimble Theaters comic strips! Aren't those the best? Hard to believe those strips were orignially about Ham Gravy and the Oyl Family. Great tribute to Segar here, Jay.

That's a pretty neat Popeye pic here; even got his dialogue down top a tee! Although I'm not too familiar about Whiffle the hen, though... ^^;
